What is the True Skate PC app
Unlike other skating games, True Skate doesn’t have you playing as a person skating around the open world, rather you control the skateboard itself and your fingers act as the skater. Inevitably it will draw comparisons to Touchgrind ($4.99), as that’s really the only similar title on iOS that’s ever made any sort of splash, but it’s important to note that the two games are quite different from each other.
In True Skate the view is pulled back to basically a 3rd-person behind-the-board camera angle, and it changes everything. Now you can see where you want to go and what objects you want to hit up, and when you land something you can just continue on to the next thing and string together a nice line of tricks. It feels like the whole park is at your fingertips and it’s really up to you on how you choose to tackle the terrain. It’s a very liberating feeling, playing True Skate.
This sports simulator is so realistic that even total amateurs will want to get out and hop on a real skateboard. The physics and controls are excellent and flawlessly responsive, so nothing stands in the way of you flipping over ramps and rails. It’s a perfect balance of easy gameplay and challenging skill development that will hook kids (or adults!) right away.
Unfortunately, the purchase price only includes one deck and one skate park — the rest must be unlocked through in-app purchases or in-game currency that takes a long time to accumulate. For the entry price, though, the starter level is plenty for quick thrills or a few (hundred) minutes of virtual extreme-sports entertainment.
How to Play
Control-wise, True Skate works very similar to Touchgrind, using various swipes and flicks to perform tricks with your board, and everything is based on how the physics of real skateboarding works. Tap down on the tail to pop the board up and then quickly level it off to perform a nice ollie and like real skating every other trick branches out from there. Ollie and flick the side of your board to kickflip, or scoop down on the tail in sort of a “U” shaped swipe to do a varial.
There are no buttons in the control system for True Skate. You’ll need to swipe next to the board to kick up to speed, then touch and drag to aside to make the board turn. You can perform tricks by flicking at different parts of the board depending on what you want to do.
A flick off the back of the board makes you perform an ollie (launching your board into the air), while a flick of the front does a nollie (similar but using the front part of the board to jump). While in the air, you can flick the board to perform flip tricks and touch it again at the right moment to stop the rotation in time to land back on the ground. There is an enormous number of named tricks you can perform, all of which show up in a list once you’ve successfully landed them.
