What is the RBI Baseball 20 PC app?

R.B.I. Baseball 20 for PC is the latest annual baseball game from the series and continues to offer a more arcade-focused style of gameplay in comparison to its biggest competitor, MLB: The Show. With MLB: The Show going multiplatform in the very near future – having been solely PlayStation for the past 20 years – the pressure is on R.B.I. to ‘come out swinging.

The appeal

R.B.I. 20 PC app has appealed in the past due to its simplicity and quick-hitting nature. Arcade action is especially fun for a sport that has struggled to keep fans interested in recent times. Making it simple to control right upon picking up a controller has previously helped the series find a ton of success.

Players get a variety of realistic pitching options based on the pitcher and scenario, shifting the analogue stick to select one, then using the left stick to place the pitch.

In the batter’s box, players use a power gauge to decide whether to emphasize getting quality contact or swinging for the fences. It’s not quite as intuitive as pitching—holding a button as the ball arrives at the plate and releasing for contact is a little strange. But it doesn’t take long to adapt.

What really stumped me with R.B.I. Baseball 20 though was that a season consists of 162 games! Loading up a 10-year Franchise would mean 1,620 games in total, more if you manage to guide a team to the Postseason.

While pitching and hitting are headline items, there has been some important quality of life changes. Ball physics are clearly improved. Pickoff attempts flash a camera when a player needs to respond and represent a minigame. Hit the correct button corresponding to a certain base fast enough and catch a runner out. R.B.I Baseball 20 doesn’t really set out to take the crown as the best sporting experience graphically.

Features

The new camera perspective when pitching feels leagues better than past games.

Away from the Franchise mode, and it has to be said that there isn’t much else in the way of content. Exhibition match is simply a single game of baseball, and online multiplayer is once again here. The only other mode is Home Run Derby; based on the real-life event that occurs each year.

This is an 8-man bracket for who can hit the most home runs in a four-minute time period. Pitching is slowed down to make it a little easier to hit the ball, and it is a lot of fun. It is also worth noting that this is the only model that features any form of commentary; something that Exhibition mode and Franchise mode are missing in RBI Baseball 20

Batting is purely a timing play but has a similar mechanic to pitching in which holding down the button will fill a meter that corresponds to the power of the swing. The more powerful the swing, the lower the accuracy, so pitch location and timing make a big difference in terms of how successful you’ll be. In my time with the game, timing the pitches never felt quite right.

Controls

RBI Baseball 20 for PC includes the option to use these new controls or classic controls, and I did find batting to be a breeze using the classic controls. With the classic controls, you can freely move your batter around the box (which actually felt like it gave me more agency than the new controls) and tap the button to swing. Playing the game this way actually reminded me of the old NES version I used to play and was probably the most fun I had.
