Download the Komoot app on PC. It is the key to the outdoors. Just plan your hiking, road cycling, or MTB adventures in the planner, and be guided along every trail, track, road, or path.
What is the Komoot PC App?
It is an app that enables you to plan a route based on how you plan to tackle it, e.g. mountain bike, road bike, hike etc. You can detail your route down to the finest point and even create a plan based on preferences such as silent trails, smooth-as-silk asphalt, traversing scree and the like. Finally, it gives audio navigation so you don’t have to take your eyes off the inevitably wonderful surroundings you have chosen to be in.
What does the Komoot for PC App do?
- Route plan to the inch.
- Select route type, surface, and elevation.
- Verbal navigation en-route.
- Offline navigation capability.
- View popular segments on your route including viewpoints and places to get refreshments.
- Track adventures and upload images for personal collection or to share with the Komoot community.
To use Komoot on Windows you’ll need to unlock some mapping. You get one ‘single region’ for free, which is fine for trying out the platform but it’s not a huge amount of use for ongoing road riding. You can buy more single regions for €3.99, or ‘bundle regions’ for €8.99, but realistically the spend here is currently €29.99, which buys you the whole world, for online and offline use, forever. Those other region-based options would soon work out very expensive, unless you never leave your local area.
A brief history
Founded by six friends living in Berlin in 2014 who thought it’d be a good idea to have an app that let people explore the outdoors more easily, and find hiking and biking routes wherever you go. They started there, but some of them wanted to move out of Berlin, so they turned Komoot into a 100% remote company, letting anyone that worked for them do so from wherever they want to live. And now there are 46 of them, spread out across multiple countries and time zones, and they’re planning to have 70 employees by September 2019.
In terms of structure, it’s a pretty flat hierarchy, with the founders and higher-ups acting more as mentors than managers. This means everyone’s really empowered to just get their job done the best way they can, with guidance available when needed.
The Highlight Feature
In areas (like Europe, for now) where there’s a critical mass of Highlights and Tours, they have a feature called “Discover”. Once activated for an area, you can search for existing Tours and Highlights and choose one. In addition to the user-created Tours, their internal teams also create routes using heat maps of where people are riding, cross-checking those with user’s routes and combining that with data from other websites and forums, and then looking at how often people ride each road or trail in a given area.
While the Komoot app is available as a free iPhone or Android app, you can plan your rides on a desktop for easier use, and then save them or send them to your phone. The free app includes one free ‘region’, which will download to your phone for turn-by-turn navigation even when you are offline.
Navigation will continue to work in other regions, but only through your phone’s 4G signal so those wishing to explore further afield may want to download further regions.
